Hello. I started in social work while I was an undergraduate student. I had a part-time job as Director of the After-School and Summer Program for the Second Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City. I did a lot of recreation work with children age 5 to 15. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about children, churches and neighborhoods.
After social work school, I worked for the Areawide Aging Agency in Oklahoma City as Associate Director. The AAA planned, coordinated, and funded social service programs for older people. I worked with organizations serving older people and did grants management work. I became acquainted with the other end of the population distribution.
One of my favorite activities was visiting Senior Citizen's Centers on the day of the covered dish dinner.
In 1980, after three years teaching at Saint Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas, I came to the Social Work Program at Bethany to be a faculty member.
I teach social work practice, social welfare policy, human diversity, and research courses. I really like these courses a lot. I can't pick a favorite among policy, research, community practice and social and cultural diversity classes. Looks like I like them all and I do. I also serve as Social Work Program Director and as Social Work/Administration of Justice Department Chair.
I do program evaluation work for several organizations in Kansas including the United Way in Salina, Mainstream, Inc. in Topeka, and for the KACCRRA (Kansas Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies) in Salina. What a long name for an organization. I am a member of the Prevention Sub-Committee for Juvenile Justice Planning for the 28th Judicial District and I am working on their evaluation also. Maybe you can come to Bethany and help me with these research projects.
On the personal side, I am married to Jayne Norlin who is Annual Fund and Donor Research Director at Bethany College. We have been married for almost thirty years!! We have three adult children, Rebecca, Rachel, and Edward, a son-in-law, Larry, and two grandchildren, Benton and Morgan. My hobbies include eating donuts and cookies, arroz, frijoles, tortillas y cervesa and conducting program evaluations.
