Prior to coming to Bethany College to teach, Margaret spent 20 years in the Kansas City area in a variety of social work positions, primarily in the field of child welfare and child abuse. Past employment includes: Wyandotte County Juvenile Court, Dept.of Child Psychiatry Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center; Wyandot Mental Health Center and Marillac Center for Children. In addition to her teaching, Margaret continues to practice social work by doing adoption, child custody home studies and professional training as a private practitioner .Margaret's latest sabbatical work focused on facilitating better collaboration between early childhood services and child welfare services.
The project resulted in both professional growth and in recommendations for changes that will improve services to young children. Margaret brings this tapestry of experiences to the classroom and uses it in application of skills and theories taught to students.
The classes Margaret teaches are: Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Foundations of Professional Practice Social Work with Individuals and Families, and Gender, Sexual Orientation and Family Diversity. In addition, she is the Practicum Director and coordinates and supervises the senior level agency practicums form the students.
Margaret's family consists of husband John, a social worker, daughter Cara, a social worker, and daughter, Megan, a mental health case manager. Margaret's hobby is gardening which she says "feeds her soul" after a hard day at work. Margaret loves teaching and working with the students. The rough times are all worth it when she sees how much each group of seniors has grown during their time at Bethany College.
