The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, or FERPA, provides individuals the right to
- inspect their educational records,
- seek to amend those records, and
- limit disclosure of the information in those records.
In general, FERPA secures a student's ability to review educational records, such as transcripts and grade reports, and to limit others' access to these records. FERPA mandates that student educational records may only be accessed by
- the student,
- school officials who need to know,
- parents of a dependant student as defined by the IRS,
- the issuer of a judicial order or subpoena, or
- those with specific written consent from the student.
As an educational institution that receives federal funds, Bethany College is bound by FERPA and seeks to full, comply with its requirements. For more information on access to student records, please contact the Bethany College Registrar at (785) 227-3280, ext. 8107 or 8105.
