Overview of the Teacher Education Program

NOTE:

The Teacher Education Program at Bethany College seeks to prepare qualified pre-service candidates for teaching positions in fields for which it has program approval from the Kansas State Board of Education.
To accomplish this the
Teacher Education Department functions to:

1. Coordinate efforts on campus so that all teacher preparation programs are of sufficiently high quality to be eligible for Kansas State Board of Education approval and national accreditation through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

2. Provide opportunities through which students can develop the qualities identified in the Bethany College model of a liberally educated person.

3. Provide early experiences in elementary and secondary classrooms for those considering teaching.

4. Identify students with professional promise and encourage them to enter the teaching profession.

5. Enable students who select teaching majors to develop the competencies and qualities associated with the Bethany College Exceptional Teacher Model.

6. Provide effective guidance services related to students

7. Recommend for licensure those who have completed an approved program and meet all requirements for licensure.

NOTE:

All approved programs leading to licensure are subject to change. Consequently, although you complete the coursework listed for your teaching major in the catalog that was in effect when you entered Bethany, it is imperative that you check with the Education Department often to ensure that you complete the coursework required for your approved program.

General Program Requirements

1. The state of Kansas might deny licensure to a candidate who has been convicted of a felony in specified classifications, or who has entered into a diversion agreement for such offenses. Students will be required to sign a Denial of Licensure Notification form when applying for admission to the Teacher Education Program, placement in ED200, Introduction to Teaching Practicum, Student Teaching, and Licensure.

2. General Education requirements for all education majors shall not be less than one-third of the 124 semester hours necessary for graduation (42 semester hours).

4. Travel expenses incurred from practicum and student teaching placements are the responsibility of the student.

5. All students participating in ED200 Introduction to Teaching: Classroom Experience & Student Teaching must purchase $1,000,000.00 Professional Liability Insurance and submit negative TB test results.  It is very highly recommended that prior to any other practicum experience, students purchase $1,000,000 worth of professional liability insurance.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program

All students wishing to prepare for a career in teaching must be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program.  Admission is a two-step process:

1. Application. A formal application to the Teacher Education Program must be filed upon completion of ED 200, Introduction to Teaching: Classroom Experience.no knowledgerecommendation from the Dean for Student Life.
 
d. Pass ED100, Introduction to Teacher Education and the Teaching Profession.
 
e. Pass ED200, Introduction to Teaching: Classroom Experience.

2. Admission. Criteria include:
 
a. Sophomore standing.
 
b. An overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (including transfer hours).
 
c. A minimum, cumulative score of 2.5 or higher on recommendations completed by selected instructors as outlined in the Teacher Education Handbook, and a positive or
