Swede Tennis Outlook 2007

The Bethany College women’s tennis team started off their season Saturday with a win against Nebraska Wesleyan (5-4) and a loss against William Jewell College (4-5). William Jewell began the season ranked 24th in the NAIA.
In 2006, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams won KCAC regular and post season championships and NAIA Region IV titles. Head coach Vic Bateman said the depth of his 2006 teams were key in winning.
“The men’s team was the most talented and deep team in the region,” Bateman said. He added that his top athletes were able to pull the team through when they needed it the most.
The Swedes return nearly all qualifying women from last year while the men enter 2007 with a young team.
“For the men there are three seniors in the top four this year, but it will come down to how our younger guys play and how much we can improve our doubles,” said Bateman. The Swede men lost their number two athlete from last year due to ineligibility this year.
“Both teams will need everyone to improve as depth is the key to winning this year,” Bateman added.
Bateman expects both teams to again claim conference and regional championships in 2007. For the men, a 2007 championship would be their fourth in as many years and for the women a championship would be their third in four years.
The Swedes continue their season Feb. 28 when both teams travel to Hutchinson Community College.

Tennis at Bethany

Tennis is one of the oldest sports started at Bethany College and has been rich in tradition ever since. Whether it was on the old grass/sandbur patch in the early 1900's or the concrete courts we now have; the Swedes know how to win.

The women have won 4 out of 6 KCAC titles in the past 6 years and had back to back region IV titles and appearances to the national tournament.

The Swedes compete in the KCAC Conference and are apart of the NAIA which places them in the Region IV.

Bethany tennis is proud to have most of their student-athletes from the midwest. They like to keep 10-12 players on each roster and while in competition they play 6 singles positions and 3 doubles positions. Our main conference competition is within state, but they do travel and compete in Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. We have also had the opportunity to take several great spring break trips all over the United States, including this year to Hilton Head, SC, where they played and got to the first rate mental training progam, Peak Performance of Bethany Alum Bryce Young, who has worked with many ATP level players.

Success comes just as importantly in the classroom as it does on the court. Numerous academic all-Americans have played for the swedes along with several teams that have qualified as an academic all-American team.
