The Health and physical Education Program provides candidates the opportunity to discover and disseminate knowledge related to physical activity, human movement, sport leisure and ways to improve overall health and quality of life to their students and the greater society, as well as the development of professional attitudes and character traits in the field of education.

Expanded Mission Statement
The Bethany College Health and Physical Education program strives to provide and instill a quality knowledge base, teaching skills, and professional attitudes and character traits amongst its teacher education students. Our program provides opportunities for all students to develop and apply content regarding health and physical activity, psychomotor, and behavioral skills. Additionally, the HPE program prepares students to be able to teach, respect, and motivate individuals and groups with various learning styles, to be reflective in their teaching, to maintain a safe positive learning environment, to be responsible decision makers and lifelong learners. Students will discover and disseminate knowledge related to physical activity, human movement, sport, leisure and ways to improve overall health and quality of life to their students, families, colleagues, and community, and diverse society.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The teacher of HPE understands the concepts of health and physical education content and applies these concepts for the development of the learner.
  2. The teacher of HPE understands how individuals learn and develop, including special needs learners, and can provide safe, developmentally appropriate opportunities that support their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
  3. The teacher of HPE understands the need to foster relationships with colleagues, parents / guardians and other teaching professionals in the learning community and seeks opportunities to grow personally.
  4. The teacher of HPE uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster inquire, collaborate and engagement in various health related and physical activity settings and understands how individuals differ in their approaches to learn.
  5. The teacher of HPE plans and implements a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies to develop healthful and physically educated individuals.
  6. The teacher of HPE understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to foster the learning and skill development of all learners in healthful living and physical activities.
  7. The teacher of HPE uses and understanding of individual group motivation and behavior to crate a safe learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation.
