Recital Attendance: Music Majors are required to attend at least 30 recitals and/or concerts every year. Music minors must attend 15. These performances include student, faculty, and visiting artist recitals as well as orchestra, band, and choir concerts. Credit will be given for attendance at other approved concerts.

Ensemble Participation: Music Majors are required to participate in a major performing ensemble representing their performance medium during every semester they are in residence at Bethany College. Instrumental Concentration Music Teaching Majors are required to participate in no fewer than two semesters of small ensembles. Music Minors are strongly encouraged to participate in major performing ensembles (Band, Choir, Orchestra, Chapel Choir, etc.).

Piano Proficiency: Music Majors and Minors are required to demonstrate proficiency on the piano, as prescribed by the department and state & national standards.

Audition: Students seeking to be accepted as Music Majors or Minors are required to perform in their principal performance area for the music facility. Full or provisional acceptance may be granted. Vocal students will need to audition again to meet the requirements for Choir. Music Performance Award auditions may serve to meet this requirement. See Audition requirements.

Performance Requirements for Majors: Music Majors will perform for the music faculty at the end of each semester of applied music lessons. Music Majors are required to perform publicly in their principal performing area at least once during each academic semester following their freshman year. Students performing degree recitals are required to perform a recital preview one month prior to the recital.

Performance Requirements for Minors: Music Minors will perform for music faculty at the end of each semester of applied music lessons.

Bethany Oratorio Society: Membership is required of all Music Majors and Minors each year of residence at Bethany College.

Organizations: Chapters of Sigma Alpha Iota Women's Music Fraternity (SAI), College Music Educators National Conference (CMENC), and The Associated Music Students of Bethany College (AMSBC) provide important leadership and service opportunities for Bethany music students.

Private Lessons: Every music major/minor student is required to take private lessons. Instructors offer lessons in voice, piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. In addition to the active performance schedule of each major ensemble, students regularly perform in recitals, chamber music concerts and
church services both on and off campus.

Music Theatre: The Bethany College Theatre and Music Departments combine efforts for the interterm musicals, held every other year, in Burnett Center.
