Policies & Procedures

The Bethany College Academic Catalog is the official reference and final word on Bethany academic policies. For more information on enrollment policies and procedures, refer to the Academic Catalog.

Other relevant policies and procedures include:

Drop, Add, or Withdraw

Students may

  • Add, change course sections through the sixth day of classes;
  • Withdraw from a course through the tenth day of classes, without the class being recorded on students' records;
  • Withdraw from a course through the ninth week of class with a "W" recorded on students' records. Such classes will not be included in GPA calculations.

Any withdrawal from a course after the ninth week of classes will be recorded on students' records as an "F" and be so calculated in students’ GPAs.

Students wishing to withdraw from a course, add a course or change a course section after enrolling should confer with their advisor.

If it is after the add/drop period students should

  • Confer with their advisors;
  • Obtain change-of-registration form from enrollment services;
  • Secure the designated approval and signatures on the form;
  • Return the form to enrollment services; and
  • Make payments, if necessary, to the accounting office.

Transferring Credit

Bethany College will accept transferring credit, provided that the courses are compatible with the Bethany liberal-arts program, and given the following stipulations:

  • Credit towards graduation requirements will be granted for general-education courses completed with a D or better. Courses transferred for credit toward general education or electives must be approved by the registrar.
  • Credit towards completion of a major will be granted for courses completed with a C or better. Courses transferred for credit toward the major must be approved by the major coordinator.
  • A maximum of 62 semester hours of college work will be accepted from a community college.

Associate of Arts Block Transfer

An Associate of Arts degree is designed to prepare students for transfer with advanced standing into Bachelor of Arts programs at four-year colleges. Courses taken for completion of an A.A. degree constitute a broad general education program, and share may of the goals and outcomes of the General Education Program at Bethany College.

Therefore a student who is transferring to Bethany College and has graduated from an accredited college with the Associate in Arts degree may transfer as a block all the courses completed as part of the requirements for an A.A. degree and is excused from completing the Bethany College General Education requirements, with two exceptions: one course in Skills for Discourse and Intellectual Life, #3: Communication-Writing and Researching; and one course in Christianity in its Global Context. The requirements for the Christianity in its Global Context flows from the unique character of Bethany as a college of the Church in Mission in Higher Education.

Student Records & Privacy

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, or FERPA, provides individuals the right to

  • inspect their educational records,
  • seek to amend those records, and
  • limit disclosure of the information in those records.

In general, FERPA secures a student's ability to review educational records, such as transcripts and grade reports, and to limit others' access to these records. FERPA mandates that student educational records may only be accessed by

  • the student,
  • school officials who need to know,
  • parents of a dependant student as defined by the IRS,
  • the issuer of a judicial order or subpoena, or
  • those with specific written consent from the student.

As an educational institution that receives federal funds, Bethany College is bound by FERPA and seeks to full, comply with its requirements. For more information on access to student records, please contact the Bethany College Registrar at (785) 227-3280, ext. 8107 or 8105.
