Psychology Department Mission
 
Psychology Department Mission:

The mission of the Bethany Psychology Program is to facilitate student development of the knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of psychology, and to prepare students for either graduate study or a variety of occupational pursuits.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate familiarity with major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology.
  2. Students will be able to apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  3. Students will use critical and creative thinking skills, skeptical inquiry techniques, and when possible, the scientific method to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.
  4. Students will demonstrate the ability to weigh evidence, tolerate ambiguity, and act ethically in accordance with the principles of the discipline of psychology.
  5. Students will emerge from the major with realistic ideas about how to implement their psychological knowledge, skills, and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of settings.

Addiction Counseling Program Mission:

The mission of the Addiction Counseling Program is to educate, challenge, and develop skills to assist persons with addictions.  This program will provide students the opportunity to apply specialized skills through assessment and treatment of various substance abuse disorders, of which affect individuals, families, and society.  This program is aligned with faith and spirituality through the various treatment models.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student learning outcomes are based on Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) Technical Assistant Protocols (TAP21-Addiction Counseling Competencies) developed by the U.S. Department of Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

  1. The student will understand the theories, drug classification, symptoms of addictions, and co-occurring disorders.
  2. The student will be able to conduct assessment and evaluation of individuals.
  3. The student will complete individual and/or family treatment/discharge plans and treatment level referral.
  4. The student will assess strengths and weaknesses to provide case management services, while considering diverse cultural backgrounds and resources.
  5. The student will have demonstrated knowledge of professional and ethical responsibilities, substance abuse treatments, aftercare, and crisis intervention techniques.
  6. The stud net will accurately demonstrate record keeping, referrals, clinical consultation, as related to addictions.
  7. The stud net will demonstrate knowledge of the importance of community health prevention and promotion.
