Federal subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans allow students to borrow up to:
- $3,500 base amount plus $2,000* additional per year for the first year of college,
- $4,500 base amount plus $2,000* additional per year after completing 24 hours, and
- $5,500 base amount plus $2,000* additional per year after completing 48 hours.
*The $2,000 additional will always be an unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
The Subsidized loan is a need-based loan and no interest accrues while the student is enrolled at least half time or more or during grace and deferment periods. The interest rate is fixed at 3.4% for loans disbursed between 7/1/2011 and 6/30/2012.
The Unsubsidized loan is not based on need and interest accrues while the student is in school. It is the student's responsibility to pay the interest as it accrues OR the student can choose to have the interest capitalized. The interest rate is fixed at 6.8%.
Students who have not borrowed a Direct Stafford loan from Bethany previously must complete the following steps at StudentLoans.gov:
1. Complete online entrance counseling
2. Complete a Master Promissory Note
