Sometimes anti-virus software is just not enough, and you need the big guns...
Some viruses are just too shrewd and powerful for run-of-the-mill anti-virus software. These are the infections that prevent you from opening things such as your Control Panel and various programs. In this instance, the virus usually shows itself in the form of some sort of pop-up window and tells you that your machine is infected and you need to download and install "their software" to fix the problem. This fix is not necessary. You can either format your computer's hard drive which is labor intensive and time intensive OR you can use the steps shown below. Though, there is no guarantee, the Computer Services department so far has had a 100% success rate with this technique, and we have seen some pretty nasty viruses during our tenure.
If your computer becomes infected, please use the following steps and software:
- Use the two links below to download the tools you will need. You may need to use a different computer that is not infected.
- Boot the infected computer into "Safe Mode" by pressing F5 or F8 at StartUp. Safe Mode will prevent the virus from running.
- While running in Safe Mode, copy rKill.exe to your computer's desktop and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on your computer.
- Once Malwarebytes is installed, open the program and click the "Check For Updates" button under the Update tab to make certain your software has the latest virus definitions.
- Restart and allow the computer to boot into regular mode.
- The instant you see your desktop, double left-click the rKill.exe icon. This will stop all virus processes in regular mode. If the virus starts to run, you know you were too slow. Restart the machine and try again. Yes, you are racing the virus!
- If after clicking rKill.exe you notice the virus does not run, you were successful. Now run Malwarebytes to clean up the virus. Once it has found all infections, you must tell Malwarebytes to clean up the infected files and to reboot.
- Run a second scan with your anti-virus software and alternate between your anti-virus software and Malwarebytes until you get a clean scan.
- The final step involves turning off System Restore. The reason is that many of these "bad viruses" will create a restore point on your computer. Meaning, after cleaning up the infection, the restore point will re-allocate the infection and you're back at square one. By turning off System Restore you prevent this process from occurring. To turn off System Restore, click Start > Control Panel > System > Restore (tab) > uncheck the box next to System Restore (this will disable System Restore) and click apply. This process will take a few minutes to complete itself. Please be patient.
- At this point your machine should be clean.

Use rKill to stop the virus from running. Note: rKill alone will not clean up the virus. |

Once the virus has been stopped from running, use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to clean up the infection. |
