Per Harling, Bethany College’s 2010-2011 Pearson Distinguished Professor of Swedish Studies, will give his first public address on September 14.
Harling will speak on “The Hymns of Lina Sandell” and lead a hymn sing at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall. Sandell, a Swedish composer, wrote many popular songs including “Children of the Heavenly Father,” “Thy Holy Wings” and “Day by Day” as well as many more hymns that have been translated into English. Harling has authored a book about Sandell.
This event is free and open to the public.
Harling specializes in composing liturgical music and has written several books on worship life, hymns and biographies. In addition to teaching and working with Bethany students, staff and faculty, he will participate in several public events and chapel services as well as a performance of his folk dance mass on October 9. Harling is also composing a morning prayer service specifically for Bethany. The world premiere will be October 1 at 10 a.m. in Presser Hall.
