Bethany College students receive the 2012 Teacher of Promise award

Bethany College seniors Collin Carlson and DeCelia Fraser have been selected for the Kansas State Department of Education’s Teacher of Promise award.

The Teachers of Promise award is one of several honors presented by the Kansas State Department of Education to help recruit and retain the best Kansas teachers for Kansas children. Carlson and Fraser were honored as two of Bethany’s brightest prospective teachers who have demonstrated professional commitment, achievement and leadership while in their teacher preparation programs.

They will also attend and participate in a staff development workshop conducted by the current eight finalists for the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. During the spring semester, these same finalists will visit Bethany College to conduct a workshop for all education majors.

Assistant Professor and Education Department Chair Gail Konzem said, “We are happy to be able to recognize outstanding pre-service educators through this award program, as well as being able to expose our students to outstanding professional educators from across this state of Kansas. They have the opportunity to meet many people and network not only with highly recognized teachers, but also with the other recipients of the award from other Kansas colleges.”

Kansas colleges and universities may each nominate two student teachers for this award. Bethany’s winners were chosen from a pool of nominees selected by members of the Bethany College Education Department. Those who were nominated best exemplify ability in the following areas: classroom environment, professionalism, instructional abilities and planning and preparation.
