Bethany College celebrated an estate gift given to the college of more than $2.2 million at a campus-wide event Thursday morning.

Lee Lundquist, a retired United States Army Colonel, left the college $2,260,460 in his estate to endow the Dean of Athletics position. The announcement of the gift was made on Founder’s Day at the campus-wide coffee break, “Big Brew.” Additionally, any remaining funds after the endowment are directed to help support the Messiah Festival of the Arts, and scholarships.

Lundquist, who attended Bethany College for two years studying business, was summoned to serve by the United States Army in 1942 and continued serving his country for 42 years. He and his wife, Karen, lived in Topeka where he stayed active in the Army Reserves and his church. While at Bethany he enjoyed participating in basketball, the Pi Sigma Chi fraternity, and the business club.

“This is a significant gift for the college,” President Robert Vogel said. “The gift helps Bethany continue to address students’ needs in a changing world and preparing them for success.”
