Stan Hays ’94 has turned his passion for barbecue into a service to others on a grand scale. His organization Operation BBQ Relief recently served its one-millionth meal during relief efforts in Louisiana after historic flooding there in August.
Hays and Will Cleaver Jr. founded Operation BBQ Relief in May 2011 in response to a need for relief efforts in tornado-stricken Joplin, Missouri. His organization joined other competition BBQ teams to help feed displaced families, police, fire, National Guard, and emergency personnel.
Since then, Operation BBQ Relief has served more than 1 million meals in 19 states. It most recent efforts were in Louisiana, where Hays served over 313,000 meals in 13 days. This was the organization’s largest deployment to date. In just five years Operation BBQ Relief has served 1, 049,000 hot barbecue meals to those in need and first responders.
