The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced on Monday, Bethany College topped the annual NWCA NAIA All-Academic team standings for the 2017-18 season.

“This honor is not only for the wrestling team itself, but also for the Bethany Faculty that have tirelessly imparted their knowledge to them,” said Bethany Head Coach Larry Nugent. “Assistant Coach Courtney Strauss has been instrumental in maintaining our team’s success culture by seamlessly combining athletics with academics. Through disciplined weekly grade checks and study halls, we aim to produce student-athletes that Bethany College can be proud of!”

According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Bethany College checked in with an average team GPA of 3.4673, unseating last year’s top team, Morningside, which came in second with an average GPA of 3.3720.

“Our wrestling team has gained a lot of momentum during the 2017-2018 year,” said Bethany Dean of Athletics, Dane Pavlovich. “Our team had a strong 2nd place showing in the KCAC Championships, won the Team of Character award, and has been active in service activities in the greater Bethany community.  This award is the pinnacle and represents the depth of our wrestling program and leadership.

Coach Larry Nugent, now in his second season with Swedes wrestling, was recently voted Coach of the Year by KCAC coaches.
