The Bethany College Department of Art and Mingenback Art Gallery presents “Happy Birthday,” an exhibition of collage works by Salina-based artist, Grace Peterson. The exhibition runs from September 4 through 28, 2018. There will be a reception for the artist with a gallery talk on Friday, September 21, from 4:00 pm – 6:00pm.
Primarily working in three-dimensional mixed media, Grace Peterson’s work includes clay, paper and non-traditional materials. Peterson has received three consecutive National Merit Awards from the League for Innovation in metalsmithing, jewelry making and painting. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums both regionally and nationally and is included in the Emprise Bank Collection in Wichita, Kansas as well as various private collections.
“Happy Birthday” is the result of a year or two where she has gone through a period of reflection. During that time, she has become more passionate in many ways and longing to experience new things – experiment without fear and unwrap the color and joy in life. “Happy Birthday” references a 3D Puppet Story Book she received as a Christmas gift. Each scene featured highly detailed and perfectly lit sets where flawless little puppet children lived. ”To this day, I often think of that book and the joy I felt when I looked at it. It was a portal that whenever I chose to, would transport me right there into that beautiful happy moment, full of fun and sweetness and glossy color that never dulled or faded. It was perfect,” she says. This body of collage work is inspired by that small gift received decades ago and it’s bright glittering colors, alluring textures, and the depth of the images, but most of all, the joy felt each time she opened that book.
In Salina, Peterson oversees the Smoky Hill River Festival’s juried art show, Art Demo area, outdoor Art Installations and the growing Art Patron Program. She also is the Salina Arts and Humanities liaison to the Community Art and Design Program and its advisory committee, and serves as a public and visual- arts resource for local artists and arts organizations.
This event is free and open to the public.
