Composition Award Frequently Asked Questions

Q: For how many percussionists should I aim?
A: 3-4 percussionists plus timpani

Q: Since I am using the Finale program, I can easily include a computer-generated recording when I submit. Is this acceptable?
A: This is acceptable but not necessary.

Q:  Is there a required length for the compositions?
A: No, as long as the composition is longer than 3 minutes.

Q: The instructions do not say anything about submitting a recording. Can one submit a sampled sound recording along with the score? If so, should I submit three copies of the recording?
A: A sound sample is not required. If one decides to submit a sound sample there is no requirement as of the number of copies

Q: Is there a limitation on the number of winds?
A: There are no limitations regarding the number of parts, but aiming for a somewhat “standard” band instrumentation would be best.

Q: Are works including piano and harp appropriate?
A: Yes both piano and harp may be used.

Q: I would like to know the exact instrumentation and numbers of instruments to  better score for the ensemble
A: The winning composition may or may not be performed by the Bethany Wind Ensemble. The score should not be tailored to any particular group.
