Tallgrass Artist Residency participant Melanie Johnson to talk at the Sandzén Gallery
July 20 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm| Free
LINDSBORG— The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery will host an artist talk by Tallgrass Artist Residency participant Melanie Johnson on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at 2 p.m. The talk is a part of the Sandzén Gallery’s 2019 Speakers Series.
Johnson is currently an associate professor of art and design at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, earning her MFA from Indiana University. She primarily creates large scale drawings that serve as a vehicle to construct stories and as a forum to exercise the physical process of combining the observed with the imagined. Johnson is interested in the simultaneous reading of an immediately recognizable image that asks the viewer to linger over a history and meaning that then unfold more slowly.
The Tallgrass Artist Residency, in partnership with the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, is centered in the small Kansas community of Matfield Green, near the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. The residency program seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains through engagement with the prairie ecosystem by inviting eight artists over a year from the North American prairie region to spend two weeks in the Flint Hills of Kansas. All artists will return to Kansas for a group exhibition and program on October 12, 2019.
The Sandzén Gallery is located at 401 North First Street in Lindsborg. There is no charge for the artist talk. For further information, please call the Gallery at 785-227-2220 or email email@example.com.
