Class of 2022: Welcome to Bethany!
We’re excited you’re here at Bethany College!
We want you to have opportunities for learning that inspire you and make you curious about the world and your relationship to it.
That’s why Bethany College is pleased to offer full-time, first-time freshmen of the Bethany Class of 2022 a FREE service-learning trip to Sweden.
Planning for the inaugural trip is underway. Watch this site for trip updates as they become available!
Here’s what we can tell you now:
When will the trip to Sweden be? Early August, 2020
Where will we go? The itinerary is still in progress, but Stockholm, Uppsala, and Sunnemo are on the short list.
What is service learning? As the name suggests, we’ll spend some time doing work which serves others but also teaches you about Sweden and its people and the organizations supporting individuals and communities in Sweden. We’re hoping this work and exploration will also help you reflect on your own experiences and values.
We want to partner with Swedes in their communities. You’ll be working in small teams. This is where you’ll learn about Swedish Swedes, Bethany Swedes, and yourself!
What’s really free? Bethany will cover your airfare, lodging, 2-3 meals a day (for some meals that may be a food allowance), all in-country organized group transportation, and all fees associated with organized group activities.*
What else is included? You’ll receive one hour of Quest II credit for participating fully in the trip and completing reflective assignments. (The credit will be applied to your Fall 2020 transcript).
What is not included? Your third meal on some days (the 3rd meal would typically be breakfast), snacks, souvenirs, baggage fees not included in the plane fare, transportation and fees for activities you choose during your free time.
What are the eligibility requirements?
1) Be in possession of a passport valid for summer of 2020. (Students are responsible for cost of passports).
2) Have a 2.0 overall GPA by the end of the Spring semester of 2020.
3) Have earned at least 48 hours of Bethany College credit by the end of the Spring 2020 semester.
4) Be in good conduct standing as determined by the Dean of Student Development.
5) Complete and submit by January 15, 2020 the online Swedes to Sweden Enrollment Form (available Spring of 2019).
*Note: Participation in the free Swedes to Sweden trip stipulates that you will return to Bethany College and complete the fall semester following the Swedes to Sweden trip. Failure to do so will result in the trip costs being transferred to your Bethany account. If a student withdraws from the trip prior to departure, all pre-trip investments (such as plane fare) will be transferred to the student’s Bethany account.
