BETHANY COLLEGE CELEBRATES HONOR STUDENTS

LINDSBORG, KAN., May 24, 2019 – Bethany College celebrated 274 students achieving academic excellence at the spring honors banquet on May 8, 2019.

Participating students were those who achieved a 3.5 GPA or above for the semester, juniors with a minimum 3.4 GPA, members of one of the honorary groups on campus, or students selected according to criteria of each academic department.

The honor groups recognized included Gold Key (honors service organization for women and host of the banquet), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Sigma Alpha Iota (music-women), Sigma Beta Delta (business/economics), Psi Chi (psychology), Honors Program (an interdisciplinary class of high achieving students), Swede Government Association, and Teachers of Promise.

The Spencer Bartlett Senior Respect Award presented annually to a graduating student who best exemplifies the greatest respect for God, for the United States of America, and for their fellow citizens was presented to female recipient, Akyva Van, and male recipient, Jonathan Gaytan.

The Donna Meredith Humphreys Award for Teaching was also presented to a faculty member. The award was established by Don and Alice Humphreys of Great Bend, Kansas as an endowed gift in memory of their daughter, Meredy, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Bethany in chemistry in 1991. The award is given annually to a faculty member who exhibits excellence in teaching ability and methods, excites intellectual curiosity in students and fellow teachers, and shows interest in students personally. The recipient must also foster leadership and responsible character. The 2019 faculty recipient was Robert Carlson, Business Department Chair.

Bethany College today announced the establishment of the Dean Coughenour Endowed Scholarship in Business. The scholarship will be awarded annually to returning Bethany College business majors to support their continued studies and internship opportunities.

Bethany College is proud to announce the return of sideline cheer, launching with the 2025–26 academic year. Leading the program is newly appointed head coach Patricia Smith, an experienced educator and cheer coach. Sideline cheer will return to Bethany’s home football and basketball games.
