Bethany College Hosts Scholarship Brunch

Sep 22, 2022

Bethany College hosted a Scholarship Brunch on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at the Sandzen Gallery in Lindsborg, KS. The event brought together scholarship patrons, student recipients, and Bethany College staff and faculty to thank donors for their generosity and provide an opportunity for patrons and students to meet. The college currently has 230 endowed scholarships and several annual scholarships awarded each year to students as part of their Bethany College award. These scholarships honor the memory of Bethany College alums, faculty, and friends. The event allowed patrons to meet recipients and share their unique Bethany College stories. According to Chris Larsen, Director of Financial Aid, "One hundred percent of our students receive some type of scholarship or grant to help fund their college experience. Thanks to patrons like these, we can make college a reality for so many promising young people."

Patrons traveled from Colorado, Missouri, Virginia, and all corners of Kansas to participate in the brunch. Bethany College faculty or coaching staff hosted each table and paired donors with recipients. Donald '98 and Mary '00 Palmer of Blue Springs, MO, represented Donald's family endowment established by his parents, Bruce and Ruth (Hubenett) Palmer '52, in memory of his grandmother, Ruth Lynner Palmer, who was a gifted vocalist. Donald and Mary are 'Swedehearts' who met while attending Bethany College. The recipient of their scholarship is a music education major and vocalist. Mary was the recipient of a scholarship while she attended Bethany College. "The scholarship made college possible for me. I had a wonderful relationship with my patron. She sent me encouraging notes and invited me to meals when I was lonely and homesick. Making the Bethany College experience available for more students is why the scholarship was founded and why our family is committed to contributing to generation after generation," said Mary Palmer.

Justin Woolsey, instrumental music performance major, shared a piece on the field drum from his summer experience participating in the drum corps during the dinner. Justin is the recipient of the Jean Y. Marr Johnson and Harold F. Johnson Scholarship Trust for Music.
