Bethany College Music Department Announces October Events

LINDSBORG, KAN. Sept. 25, 2023 - The Bethany College Music Department welcomes Lindsborg and surrounding communities to the following events. 


On Tuesday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m., a Faculty Recital in the Pearson Chapel will feature the Bethany College Music Department faculty members.


Sunday, October 15, at 3 p.m., the Bethany College Choir and Handbell ensemble will perform a concert as a part of the Homecoming and Hyllningsfest weekend in Lindsborg. The venue for this concert will be Bethany Lutheran Church at 320 N. Main St., Lindsborg. 


Tuesday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m., a department recital will be held in the Pearson Chapel on the Bethany College Campus. Department recitals are held four times a semester and showcase the talented music students at Bethany College.


Friday, October 20, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Hal Grossman will present a master class to string majors on October 20th at 2 P.M. Laura Black, Lecturer of High Strings at Bethany College, will have her entire studio participate in this opportunity. Grossman is a Professor of Violin at The University of Oregon and on the violin faculty at the Aria International Music Academy, Marrowstone Music Festival, and the Northwest Music Retreat. He is the founder and creator of the award-winning The Grossman Method, a course of study addressing musician’s health issues.


Sunday, October 22, at 4 p.m., the Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley (COSV) and the Bethany College Choir will perform a concert in Presser Hall on the Bethany College Campus. The COSV is a unique, auditioned regional ensemble of professional musicians supported by Bethany College and the Lindsborg Arts Council. Under the musical direction of Keith Dodson, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Studies, the COSV seeks to educate and engage audience members through the performance of orchestral masterworks.


This concert will include works by Handel, Elgar, Haydn, and Mozart. Featured performers are Laura Hammes Black, Hal Grossman, Shaohong "Betty" Yuan, and Meagan Dodson with a special performance by the Bethany College Choir and the Dalkoren Chamber Choir.


Tuesday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m., a department recital will be held in the Pearson Chapel on the Bethany College Campus. Department recitals are held four times a semester and showcase the talented music students at Bethany College.

Bethany College conferred degrees upon 99 students in Presser Hall Auditorium on April 27, 2024. The ceremony honored students who earned Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Music Education from the college during the 2023-2024 academic year. Summer, fall, and spring graduates were honored during a Baccalaureate worship service at 10:30 a.m. in Presser Hall, followed by Commencement at 2 p.m. Campus Pastor Melissa Woeppel led the Baccalaureate Service, and Rev. Lamont Wells, Executive Director of the Network of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Co llege and Universities (NECU). Gracelyn Gaskill '24, a chemistry and music major from Lindsborg, Kansas, provided special music for Commencement. Senior class speakers Inioluwa "Enoch" Ojo '24, a biology major from Katy, Texas, and Benjamin "Ben" Turner '24, a History and Political Science Major from Peyton, Colorado, gave thoughtful remarks on their time at Bethany College, taking time to thank their friends, faculty, and coaches. Dr. Brent Mai '85, Dean of University Libraries at Wichita State University, gave the commencement address, encouraging this year's graduates to go out into the world and exercise the four tenets of stoicism: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.

Interim President Steve Eckman commended the efforts of the faculty and staff in securing the grant, stating, "We are immensely grateful to the McPherson County Community Foundation for their incredible generosity. This grant will benefit our students and enrich the educational experiences available in the Smoky Valley community."

The newly appointed Presidential Search Committee will commence their work immediately, aiming to recommend a candidate for Bethany College's 16th president to the board by the April 2025 board meeting.
