Bethany Men’s Soccer Opens Season with Thrilling Overtime Victory

September 4, 2019
The Bethany men’s soccer team kicked off their 2019 campaign in a thrilling way today. The Swedes defeated the visiting Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University 2-1 with some overtime excitement.

Both teams pressed in the first half but despite nine total shots by the teams, five of which were on target, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Swedes then kicked things off in the second half when Jack Rhys-Jones, senior midfielder, netted one to give Bethany a one-goal advantage. However, 15 minutes later, the Tigers were able to get their revenge and sneak one past the Bethany defense. While both teams had a chance to take the game into regulation, neither team would find the goal for the remainder of the second half. However, it took just over one minute in overtime for the Swedes to become victors when Zen Baatjes, senior defender, took fired one past the diving keeper and into the goal.

In total, the Swedes took 19 shots compared to DWU’s seven, commanding the ball throughout the majority of the game. Bethany put 12 of their shots on target and defensively, Roland Kiss, sophomore keeper, recorded one save for the Swedes. The Bethany attack was well rounded as eight Swedes fired off shots led by Kevin Sithole, sophomore forward, who recorded seven shots, five of which were on target.

Up Next . . .

The Swedes take some time before they host Doane University in their next contest on September 8 in Lindsborg. This game is set for 1:15 p.m. following the women’s contest.
