Assistant Prof of Piano & Music Theory

Han Cheol Kang is a pianist, harpsichordist, and educator whose work encompasses solo and collaborative performance, historical keyboard performance, and music theory. He serves as Assistant Professor of Piano and Music Theory at Bethany College, where he teaches piano, harpsichord, piano proficiency, and music theory and collaborates with the college’s choral program.

Kang earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Literature and Artist Diploma in Harpsichord from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He also holds a Master of Music and Master of Musical Arts in Harpsichord from Yale University, a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Pusan National University in South Korea. His training in both modern piano and historical keyboards allows him to work with students across a broad range of repertoire and performance practices.

An active performer, Kang has appeared as a pianist and harpsichordist in solo, collaborative, orchestral, and early music settings. He is a First Prize winner of the Sinfonia da Camera Concerto Competition and the Busan Maru International Music Festival Piano Competition, and was a finalist in the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition. Recent engagements include performances as harpsichordist and continuo keyboardist with the Five Cities Baroque Festival.

Before joining Bethany, he served on the music faculties of John Wood Community College and the University of Illinois Springfield.
