Religion Speaks - An Educational Event

March 1, 2022

We invite you to join us for an educational event designed for students, colleagues, clergy, and laity who are interested in hearing and proclaiming the Good News. Our presenters will offer perspectives on contemporary religious topics intended to assist those who faithfully listen to and heed the Gospel message. We look forward to welcoming you to Bethany College.

His presentation is entitled, “Religion, Race, and Place in North Carolina Hip Hop Music.” He will focus on two Grammy-nominated records, namely J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive and Rhapsody Lalla’s Wisdom, as they focus on the intersection of the themes of religion, race, and place.

11 am Dr. Arminta Fox, Associate Professor of Religion and Director of Varenhorst Center & Peer Ministry, will present a lecture entitled, “Reading the Bible Alongside Experiences, or Incarceration.” This address will consider certain passages in Corinthian correspondence with a focus on the power dynamics that hinder freedom either in the 1st century or the 21st century.

12 pm Lunch at Messiah Lutheran Church, included with registration.

1 pm Chad Moore is the Director of Path to Your Purpose at Bethany and a Ph.D. candidate in Religion in American Culture at Boston University. Chad’s presentation is entitled “Enterprise Evangelicalism: A New Framework for Understanding the Development of American Evangelicalism’s Promotion & Defense Capitalism.” The talk is drawn from Chad’s dissertation research in which he is seeking to understand how and why evangelical universities across the Sunbelt came to view defending free enterprise as a Christian duty during the long 20th century.

The cost is $25 per person. Make your reservations with Richard Monson at 620-241-6003 or monsonrb@bethanylb.edu. The event is made possible by Bethany College, Bethany House of Studies, and the Central States-Synod.
