MILLER AND ATKINSON ACKNOWLEDGED FOR EXCELLENCE

June 2, 2022

LINDSBORG, KAN., June 2, 2022-Bethany College recognized Rebecca Miller, Assistant Professor of Communication, and Tyler Atkinson, Associate Professor of Religion, during the employee appreciation dinner on May 19. Adam Pryor, Bethany College Provost, awarded Miller the Donna Meredith Humphrey’s Award and Atkinson the Mortvedt Teaching Excellence & Campus Leadership Award.

Professor Miller, or “Reb” to her students, was nominated due to her big heart and drive to see all her students succeed. Don and Alice Humphreys of Great Bend, Kansas established The Donna Meredith Humphrey’s Award as an endowed gift in memory of their daughter, Meredy, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Bethany in chemistry in 1991. This award is given annually to a faculty member who exhibits excellence in teaching ability and methods, excites intellectual curiosity in students and fellow teachers, and shows interest in students personally. The recipient must also foster leadership and responsible character.

Professor Atkinson was nominated for his advocacy for both students and faculty at Bethany College. The Mortvedt Teaching Excellence & Campus Leadership Award seeks to emphasize the quality of teaching, encourage faculty in their pursuit of excellence, assist Bethany in nurturing an academic climate that fosters teaching at its best, and enhance teaching as a profession. Robert Mortvedt, President of Bethany College from 1953 to 1958, had a distinguished career as an English teacher, scholar, and administrator.
