Mitigation Strategies

Resources

The health and safety of our students and employees is our top priority. As such, Bethany College established two coronavirus teams. One team of faculty members was created to focus on classroom expectations, accommodations, and safety within classroom spaces and the second team has planned for the implementation of safety precautions for all aspects of campus safety beyond the classroom.

This plan incorporates recommendations of both campus C Teams, and is specific to Bethany College’s physical location in Lindsborg, Kansas; student body size, class size, community and county population, health metrics, rate of COVID-19 spread, and absence of a mass transit system. Also incorporated are required health precautions set by external bodies who administer participation in collegiate competitions. Most of all, Bethany College has leaned on local health officials, guidelines and recommendations of Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), McPherson County Health Department (MCHD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American College Health Association (ACHA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).

In addition to safety for all, this COVID-19 plan was also developed in consideration of Bethany College core values: hospitality, community, integrity, servant leadership, excellence, and sustainability. Based on a commitment to these core values, all students and employees have been asked to acknowledge that they share in the responsibility to follow health precautions.

This plan takes effect as of August 10, 2020, was updated December 30th, 2020 and will remain in place until further notice.

Prevention

  • General Campus Heath Precautions

To protect the safety of students and employees while on campus the College will require that all students, employees and visitors:

    • Wear a mask, or face covering that covers the nose and mouth in all common areas of campus. N95 medical and clinical masks are acceptable but not required. Campus is also subject to the Lindsborg city ordinance.
    • Practice social distancing, and stay six feet apart from others.
    • Complete a daily health screenings, which requires taking a temperature, online for employees and visitors or for students.
    • No one should come to campus if they do not feel well, or exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms, or leave immediately if exhibiting such symptoms after arriving on campus.
    • Visitors may be asked to leave campus if they do not follow health precautions.
    • Practice good personal hygiene:
    1. wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use sanitizer placed around campus.
    2. avoid touching face, eyes or mouth
    3. cover mouth for a cough or sneeze
    • Be mindful to avoid contact with high touch surfaces and diligent in disinfecting personal devices.
    • Respect the comfort level and preferences of others on campus regardless of personal beliefs.

Modified face coverings, or temporary removal of a mask may be permitted

    • As determined by the Athletics Department
    • As determined by Fine Arts when the activity requires the use of the mouth; for anything other than talking, such as playing an instrument, acting, or singing.
    • When the employee is alone in an enclosed individual office, or a student is alone in their personal residence hall room or apartment.
    • While eating, but socially distanced from others.
    • When a medical condition, mental condition, or hearing impairment as determined in individual situations, warrants an exception.

  • Shared Responsibility
    • It is the shared responsibility of all employees to inform visitors of the required health precautions and remind them to complete the required health screen BEFORE coming to campus.
    • It is the responsibility of supervisors to monitor and require compliance with this policy by employees.
    • It is the responsibility of faculty and instructors to monitor compliance with this policy in the classrooms.

Additional student precautions see Academics  and Student Development

  • Enhanced Sanitizing

Campus Facilities, housekeeping, has increased sanitization across campus, consistent with CDC recommendations. Additional disinfectant (CDC and EPA approved) has been provided for voluntary use by students, and employees at alternative times as follows:

    • Campus building coordinators will facilitate a cleaning schedule for additional and sanitizing within each building.
    • Employees have been provided disinfectant, and also aerosolized disinfectant, and are encouraged to sanitize common and high touch areas, and personal items within their work space.
    • Faculty will disinfect each classroom space between each class with aerosolized disinfectant.
    • Use of wall mounted sanitizer stations, available in most buildings, is encouraged when proper hand washing is not possible.
    • Administrative departments have removed from public use, high touch items that can’t be adequately sanitized.
    • Computer labs will be disinfected more often during hours of operation.
    • Students have been provided disinfectant for use in their private resident hall bathrooms and literature explaining proper use for effective sanitization.

  • Shared Spaces
    • Indoor group seating and shared study space areas have been modified, closed or restricted in capacity to adhere to social distancing protocols.
    • Capacity will be restricted in weight and conditioning rooms so contacts can be restricted and social distancing enforced. Equipment will be cleaned and disinfected between use.
    • The dining hall will be not be available for dine-in until further notice.

  • Food Service
    • Food Services has implemented additional contact barriers, PPE and enhanced disinfecting protocol for food preparation and food service, pursuant to health standards.
    • Food Service employees, (Sodexo) are subject to daily health screens.
    • Students and employees will be limited to carry out meals from the dining hall and dine in will be prohibited for the Fall, Interterm and the Spring semester. This will be continuously reviewed by the C Team, in consultation with Food Services and modified as local guidelines permit.
    • To adhere to all health precautions, Pihlblad Union shall be entered from the north and/or west doors only, and the dining hall from the north doors, for carry out meals. The southeast and southwest doors should be used to exit the dining hall and Pihlblad Union.
    • Masks are required to be worn by anyone in the dining hall at all times.
    • Because eating will not be permitted in the dining hall, no one will be allowed to enter without a mask.
    • Hours of breakfast, lunch and dinner will be extended to accommodate social distancing, and decrease the number in the dining hall at any given time.
    • The number of people in the dining hall at one time will be monitored and limited so social distancing can be enforced. Dining hall hours remain subject to change as necessary to adhere to health guidelines.
    • Food Services in consultation with the C Team will modify and/or limit self-serve options and/or sanitize as required any self-serve equipment consistent with food service and COVID health guidelines
    • Outside groups and/or visitors may be permitted to use the dining hall subject to the same restrictions as campus (ie carry out meals) on a case by case basis subject to prior approval by the Events Coordinator and in consultation with local health guidelines and the C Team.

  • Individual Personal Protective Equipment & Other Precautions
    • Upon check-in for Fall 2020, all students are provided one reusable cloth antimicrobial face mask and one reusable oral thermometer, and information on COVID-19 campus precautions, and expectations during orientation.  PPE will be available in the Student Development office for the Interterm/Spring, 2021.
    • All employees are offered one reusable antimicrobial face mask, plexi desk shields and face shields.
    • Dutch doors have been installed in some areas of campus to reduce contact with high touch surfaces, better direct unexpected or unplanned public or visitor contact, and limit concerns.
    • Signage to prohibit, limit or allow contact based on individual comfort levels has been provided to employees to post as they choose on office doors. Regardless, anyone entering an office should knock and give an employee time to apply a face mask.
    • Signage in campus buildings is posted to remind of required precautions especially masks and social distancing.
    • Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to use individual water bottles to minimize touching of fountains.

Internal contact tracing

The College, mindful of privacy, will implement internal contact tracing and/or consult health officials as soon as symptoms are reported or become known. In some situations, this contact tracing will start before a county health department has requested contacts, based on the College’s effort to reduce potential spread, make temporary decisions to quarantine or isolate, expedite the tracing process for the benefit of the county, and to increase the likelihood of remembering and identifying contacts. If health officials request contacts of an individual, the internal documentation of contacts will be shared. With everyone’s cooperation, Bethany College can decrease the chance of spread and reduce the likelihood of quarantine and/or isolation!

  • Testing

COVID-19 testing differs by location. The time to obtain test results depends on the test used. COVID-19 testing protocol varies by location.  Campus wide testing is currently not recommended by local health officials.  Students with symptoms of COVID-19, should call Health Services.  Employee should contact their healthcare provider. Visit the McPherson County Department of Health or KDHE, for the latest information on testing for our region.

Note: The College has no control over charges for administering a test, laboratory services or whether or not insurance covers such expenses and is not able to pay for tests of students or employees.

    Notification of Test Results

According to health officials, general communication of a COVID-19 test results is initiated by the county health department in the county of the residence reported by the person who is tested or by the provider or facility who ordered or performed the test. Positive test results are first communicated to the patient and information is gathered by the county health department for contact tracing. The county health department will release case confirmations.

    See Internal Contact Tracing

In situations that a McPherson County (or Bethany College) address is not used the College may or may NOT be directly informed about the result of a COVID-19 test.

MCHD has direct numbers for College contacts below to coordinate efforts and communicate test results and other guidance as appropriate.

    • Kolby Martin, RN, Campus Nurse (Health Services)
    • Amie Bauer, Vice President of Administration and General Counsel
    • Rocky Krueger, Student Development
    • Joshua Snider, Director of Campus Safety

  • College Protocol for Positive COVID-19 student or employee

College Protocol for Positive COVID-19 student or employee

    • If a test was taken without known exposure, and is negative no isolation is required.

  • Contact Tracing

The College administration believes that contact tracing is a vital part of the elimination of infectious disease like COVID-19. All Bethany College employees and students shall cooperate with contact tracing, initiated by a county health department, other health officials. Bethany may initiate internal contract tracing prior to a health department. See Internal Contact Tracing

Bethany College recommends that in preparation for meaningful participation in contact tracing, employees and students document their daily routine, or contacts across campus.

Close Contacts: An employee and/or student is as a close contact if they are:

    • Six feet or closer than someone who has COVID-19 for at least 10* minutes. Note, if within six feet over several times a day, although less than 10 minutes each individual contact, if the combination of all contacts exceeds 10 minutes, this qualifies as a close contact case. Masks reduce the likelihood of spread but don’t eliminate one as a contact. (*KDHE considers 10 minutes but CDC follows 15 minutes) OR
    • Direct physical contact with someone who has COVID-19 (touched, hugged, or kissed them). OR
    • Sharing eating or drinking utensils with someone who has COVID-19. OR
    • Being exposed to respiratory droplets by someone with COVID-19 through a sneezed cough, etc.

Requirements of Those Identified as a Close Contact:
