The health and safety of our students and employees is our top priority. As such, Bethany College established two coronavirus teams. One team of faculty members was created to focus on classroom expectations, accommodations, and safety within classroom spaces and the second team has planned for the implementation of safety precautions for all aspects of campus safety beyond the classroom.
This plan incorporates recommendations of both campus C Teams, and is specific to Bethany College’s physical location in Lindsborg, Kansas; student body size, class size, community and county population, health metrics, rate of COVID-19 spread, and absence of a mass transit system. Also incorporated are required health precautions set by external bodies who administer participation in collegiate competitions. Most of all, Bethany College has leaned on local health officials, guidelines and recommendations of Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), McPherson County Health Department (MCHD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American College Health Association (ACHA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).
In addition to safety for all, this COVID-19 plan was also developed in consideration of Bethany College core values: hospitality, community, integrity, servant leadership, excellence, and sustainability. Based on a commitment to these core values, all students and employees have been asked to acknowledge that they share in the responsibility to follow health precautions.
This plan takes effect as of August 10, 2020, was updated December 30th, 2020 and will remain in place until further notice.

Prevention
Education
Prevention cannot occur without education on the facts of COVID-19. Signage is posted in all parts of campus to educate, inform and remind of the importance to follow health precautions, follow proper hygiene and remain aware of symptoms. Campus updates are provided to students, employees, through campus email and if necessary a Swede alert. The community, and parents of students will be educated on modifications to health precautions and relevant information through news releases. A
COVID-19 page was added to the College website in March and provides information specific to different cohorts, and also frequently asked questions.
What to do if you have symptoms
Internal contact tracing
The College, mindful of privacy, will implement internal contact tracing and/or consult health officials as soon as symptoms are reported or become known. In some situations, this contact tracing will start before a county health department has requested contacts, based on the College’s effort to reduce potential spread, make temporary decisions to quarantine or isolate, expedite the tracing process for the benefit of the county, and to increase the likelihood of remembering and identifying contacts. If health officials request contacts of an individual, the internal documentation of contacts will be shared. With everyone’s cooperation, Bethany College can decrease the chance of spread and reduce the likelihood of quarantine and/or isolation!
Department Protocols
Academics
Classrooms: Spaces will be modified and/or moved to larger rooms so students can sit at least six feet apart.
Classroom learning will be modified to include a hybrid approach and/or other accommodations are made to provide for those students who are quarantined or isolated.
Disinfecting: Faculty will use provided EPA & CDC approved disinfectant to sanitize high touch surfaces in classroom spaces after every use. This will be in addition to cleaning provided by National Management housekeeping services.
Faculty Office Hours: Faculty will determine the format of office hours, virtual or remote, within the context of Bethany College required health precautions. Such modifications will be included in the class syllabus.
Admissions
- As of 7/13/20 only one visitor will be scheduled in each time slot to reduce contacts by overlapping, and allow time to sanitize between visitors.
- Communicate the visit with the student. Students will fill out the form, or set up with an admissions rep. Coaches will be asked to work with reps to set up visits.
- Before the visitor arrives, Bethany College Admissions will need to verify if they have filled out the health screening form and if not remind them to do so before entering the Welcome Center.
- Once we learn the visitor is on campus Admissions will act quickly to meet the visitor at the door.
- All campus visitors will meet in the Welcome Center living room area for greetings; admissions/financial discussions and faculty will come to the Welcome Center.
- If visiting with a coach; coaches will come to Welcome Center to pick up the visitor and leave the Welcome Center.
- After each visit, Admissions staff will sanitize spaces before the next family arrives.
- Admissions staff will wear masks with visitors and maintain social distance.
- Bethany College Admissions will still provide great hospitality with the offer of water, coffee, and cookies, presented on a tray for a touchless exchange.
Athletics
All student-athletes, and coaches both in and off season, will be subject to protocol specific to athletes herein. In addition to Bethany College health precautions, Bethany College coaches, athletic staff and student-athletes are subject to guidelines written and distributed by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).
Additional measures specific to Bethany College Athletics and consistent with the NAIA and KCAC include:
Communications
Spokespersons
Direct inquires to Brittany Torres, Communications Coordinator, who will coordinate with College administration responsible for providing questions, answering media, etc.
● Amie Bauer, Vice President of Administration | General Counsel
● Adam Pryor, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs
● Laura Moreno, Dean of Athletics
Misinformation
It is very likely that rumors and misinformation will be circulated. If the misinformation is creating a panic among students and employees, it is imperative that appropriate communication is sent out addressing potential rumors. If it is necessary to dispel rumors, Bethany College will send appropriate communications via email, or Swede alert.
Student Development
General Expectations
Students are expected to follow all health precautions included in this plan. Students should pay attention to signage around campus, campus email communications, and review the student handbook and conduct code.
Reckless behavior both on or off campus that shows a disregard for the health precautions are a violation of the student conduct code.
Because the health and safety of the campus community is a shared responsibility, students shall inform the RD on call immediately if they have any COVID-19 related concerns. (See
Contact Tracing) If a student is contacted by the MCHD and been requested to quarantine or isolate, MCHD will notify the College. If you are contacted by an organization other than MCHD to quarantine/isolate, please notify the RD on call immediately. The RD will contact an appropriate College official to appropriately mitigate, or respond pursuant to this plan.
Mitigation Strategies
MITIGATION RESPONSE BASED ON LEVEL OF RISK
All required health precautions in this plan will remain in place, and additional actions will be taken depending on level of risk requires. Factors to assess risk include local metrics, healthcare availability, daily rate of new cases in the county, daily rate of new cases in the community, and/or campus, resources and other considerations as the College deems appropriate. The College may add protocol not listed as appropriate for the health and safety of all.
Change in precautions that affect visitors or local community members or other visitors will be announced by news release, the College website or social media as appropriate.
